History
Father James McName and Father James Rooney, assistants
at
Holy Family in 1925, found they had a common concern for the
African - American community segregated on Tulsa' s North side.
They began to visit this ghetto, where people were still trying to
rebuild their homes and lives after the devastating of the 1921
race riot. From their contacts they learned that the most pressing
was for a school. Soon they were laying the groundwork for one.
At first the project was dedicated to St. Pius V, but a few months
later it became to be known as St. Monica .
